The GFA Premier League, operating under the name Grenada Premier Division, sits at the apex of football in Grenada. Established by the Grenada Football Association in 1983, the competition features ten clubs contesting matches each season. The structure follows a double round-robin format, ensuring every team faces its opponents twice for a total of 18 matches. This schedule determines the domestic hierarchy and dictates participation in regional tournaments.
Success within this league carries specific consequences beyond local prestige. The champion secures a spot in the CFU Club Shield, recognized as the second-tier Caribbean international competition. Notably, no club from Grenada has ever advanced to the higher-tier Caribbean Club Championship. The path to promotion and relegation is strict: the team finishing tenth drops directly to the First Division. Meanwhile, the ninth-placed side enters a playoff against the runner-up of the lower tier to decide who remains in the top flight.
The competitive landscape is defined by a small group of dominant forces. Hurricanes FC and Paradise FC share the record for most titles, each having won seven championships. This tally includes seasons where the league was abandoned or contested under alternative formats. Queens Park Rangers SC follows with five or six titles depending on the official count. Hard Rock FC established a period of dominance by winning three consecutive titles between 2011 and 2013. The current reigning champion is St. John's Sports, claiming the 2025 title.
The league has experienced considerable administrative instability over its history. Seasons were abandoned in 2004, 2009, and 2019-20, while the 2020-21 and 2022-23 campaigns were not held. Despite these interruptions, the competition continues to function. It achieved its first live television broadcast in 2014, marking a step toward greater visibility. Attendances remain modest, reflecting the scale of the local game. The direct route to the CFU Club Shield remains a unique feature distinguishing it from other regional leagues.
