The Singapore Premier League operates as the highest level of professional football in Singapore. Standing at Level 1 of the national pyramid, the competition serves as the primary domestic stage for the country's elite clubs. It maintains a closed franchise model, meaning there is no promotion or relegation to the Singapore Football League, which occupies the second tier. This structure ensures stability and allows clubs to meet strict licensing criteria set by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS). Participation is granted by invitation rather than sporting merit alone, with clubs required to adhere to rigorous administrative, financial, and infrastructural standards.
The league currently features eight teams competing in a triple round-robin format. Each side plays every other club three times throughout the campaign, resulting in 21 matches per team. This intensive schedule creates a tight contest for the title. The current champions are Lion City Sailors, who secured their fifth championship in the most recent 2025–26 season. Historically, the competition has been dominated by a select group of sides. Warriors FC holds the record for the most titles with nine victories. Albirex Niigata S has claimed six championships, while Tampines Rovers have won five. The league's identity shifted significantly in 2018 when it adopted its current name to reflect a more professional outlook.
Individual performances have also shaped the league's narrative over nearly three decades. Daniel Bennett stands as the player with the most appearances in the competition's history, having featured in 518 matches. In terms of offensive output, Aleksandar Đurić holds the record for the most goals scored, reaching 385. These figures highlight the longevity and consistency required to succeed at this level. The competition remains distinct within the Asian football landscape due to its unique closed-system approach, which prioritises long-term club viability over the traditional open ladder of lower divisions.
