The Bangladesh Premier League is the top-tier professional football competition in Bangladesh. Founded in 2007 by the Bangladesh Football Federation, it represents a shift from the semi-professional Dhaka Premier Division League to a nationwide professional structure. The competition has undergone several name changes, starting as the B.League before becoming the Bangladesh League in 2009. It was renamed the Bangladesh Premier League in 2012 and subsequently rebranded as the Bangladesh Football League in 2025 to distinguish it from the country's prominent cricket league.
The league currently features six clubs: Abahani, Arambagh, Bangladesh Police, Bashundhara Kings, Brothers Union, and Fakirerpool. The season follows a double round-robin format where each team plays 18 matches. There are no play-offs for the championship; the title is decided solely by the final league table.
Promotion and relegation exist between the competition and the second-tier Bangladesh Championship League. The bottom two teams are relegated, while the top two from the lower tier are promoted, subject to club licensing regulations. This structure ensures a competitive balance within the national football hierarchy.
Mohammedan SC holds the record for the most titles in the history of the top tier. The club won the 2024–25 season, securing the championship position. Notable historical moments include the introduction of promotion and relegation in 2012. The competition also faced a sponsorship controversy in 2025 involving Petronas and United Healthcare. The key distinction for this competition is that it is the primary football league, whereas the 'Bangladesh Premier League' name is more widely associated internationally with the franchise-based T20 cricket league organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
