Premier League (Botswana) 2026/27

The Premier League sits at the summit of Botswana football, operating as the nation’s highest tier under the control of the Botswana Football Association. Its structure relies on a double round-robin format, where 16 teams play each other twice, completing 30 matches per side. The season runs from August through May, a schedule designed to fit the local climate.

The league maintains a strict promotion and relegation system with the second tier, the Debswana First Division. The bottom three sides from the top flight drop down to one of two regional streams within the first division. Meanwhile, the champions of those northern and southern streams, plus a playoff winner between runners-up, earn promotion to the premier division. This mechanism ensures movement between the national professional level and the regional streams.

Gaborone United holds the title of current reigning champion, having secured victories in the 2024–25 and 2025–26 seasons. The competition introduced VAR technology during the 2025–26 campaign. Historically, the league expanded from 12 to 16 teams in the 2004–05 season. The 2019–20 season concluded without a winner after being cancelled due to the pandemic, with Jwaneng Galaxy declared champions based on the standings at the time of suspension.

Success in the league carries significant continental weight. The champion qualifies for the CAF Champions League, providing a route to international competition. This distinguishes the top flight from the domestic cup competition, the Botswana FA Challenge Cup, where the winner enters the CAF Confederation Cup. The cup differs by allowing lower-league teams to face top-flight opposition, whereas the league is defined by its national scope and professional infrastructure.

The competition has undergone various sponsorship name changes over the years, currently known as the FNB Premiership. It replaced the pre-independence Bechuanaland Union African Soccer League in 1978. While the Super Cup has been played intermittently between league and cup winners, it remains an inconsistent fixture compared to other nations.
