The Bahraini Premier League, currently known as the Nasser bin Hamad Premier League, operates as the top tier of football in Bahrain. Founded in 1956 by the Bahrain Football Association, it sits at Level 1 of the national pyramid. The competition distinguishes itself from other local contests like the Bahraini FA Cup and the Crown Prince Cup through its league structure rather than knockout format. While cup winners qualify for the AFC Cup, the Premier League champion earns a place in the AFC Champions League Two.
The season follows a double round-robin system where each team plays every opponent twice. This results in 22 matches per side and 132 fixtures in total. A notable structural feature is the promotion and relegation system which involves play-offs. The bottom two teams face direct relegation to the Bahraini Second Division. Meanwhile, the ninth and tenth-placed clubs enter a four-team tournament alongside the second division's third and fourth placed teams. The bottom two from this group are relegated, while the top two secure promotion. The second division champion and runner-up gain automatic promotion.
Al-Muharraq SC holds the record for the most successful club with 36 titles. This includes a run of 10 consecutive wins spanning from 1956–57 to 1966–67. Al-Riffa SC follows as the second most successful side with 14 titles. The current reigning champion is Al-Muharraq SC, having secured the 2024–25 season.
The league underwent significant changes in 2002 when clubs were amalgamated to reduce numbers and strengthen the competition. This included the formation of Bahrain SC from the merger of Bahrain and Al-Khaleej. The current roster includes A'Ali, Al Ahli, Al Ittifaq Maqaba, Al Khalidiya, Al Najma, and Al Riffa. The league has seen various name changes and structural overhauls over its history.
