The Barbados Premier League serves as the highest level of professional football on the island, operating under the authority of the Barbados Football Association. Founded in 1947, it holds the distinction of being the oldest active football league in the Caribbean region. The competition has endured various interruptions throughout its history, including periods where tournaments were not held due to administrative or external factors. The current structure features ten clubs competing in a round-robin format. Each team plays every other side within the division. There are no championship playoffs; the title is decided solely by final league standings. The bottom two teams face automatic relegation to the second tier, the Barbados Division One. Promotion from that level typically sees the top two sides move up, although historical variations have included zone-based structures. Domestic success is heavily concentrated. Weymouth Wales, formerly known as New South Wales FC, dominates the history of the competition. The club has secured 21 championships as of 2025, far surpassing its nearest rival, Notre Dame SC, which has nine titles. Weymouth Wales entered the 2026 season as the reigning champion, having won the previous three editions consecutively. A notable characteristic of the league is its limited engagement with continental competitions. Unlike many other nations in the CONCACAF region, Barbadian clubs have not participated in the primary CONCACAF Champions Cup since its inception. Instead, they have competed in the second-tier CFU Club Shield. The league utilizes the centralized Barbados National Stadium in Bridgetown for many fixtures, reflecting the depth of the four-tier local system despite the island's small size.
