About

The Libyan Premier League, known in Arabic as الدوري الليبي الممتاز, stands as the highest level of domestic football in Libya. Administered by the Libyan Football Federation, it replaced earlier provincial championships for the Eastern, Western, and Southern regions when it began in 1963. The competition sits at Level 1 in the national pyramid, directly above the Libyan Second Division.

Operational structures have shifted considerably over recent years. While historically a single national league, the current format divides teams into regional groups to address logistical and security constraints. In the 2024–25 season, thirty-six clubs competed across four groups. Participants play a round-robin schedule within their respective groups before the leading teams advance to a championship phase. These final stages frequently take place in neutral locations abroad, such as Italy or Egypt, rather than on Libyan soil.

Al-Ittihad Tripoli holds the record for the most titles with eighteen wins. Al-Ahly Tripoli follows closely with fourteen championships. Other significant winners include Al-Ahly Benghazi and Al-Madina Tripoli. The competition has experienced periods of suspension due to political conflict, including intervals during the late 1970s and 2010s. Al-Ahly Tripoli claimed the most recent title in the 2024–25 campaign.

The league maintains its original name without major sponsorship changes. It operates independently from the Libyan Cup, also known as the Al-Fatih Cup, which functions as a separate knockout tournament.
