The Uganda Premier League occupies the apex of the national football pyramid, standing above the FUFA Big League and regional divisions. Organized by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations, the competition functions as the primary vehicle for professional football in the country. It distinguishes itself from the Uganda Cup and the FUFA Super Cup through its league-based structure rather than knockout formats.
The tournament operates on a double round-robin system where each side plays every opponent twice. This schedule generates 30 matches per team during a standard 16-club season. The league plans to expand to 18 teams for the 2026–27 campaign. There are no playoffs to determine the winner; the club accumulating the most points over the course of the season is crowned champion. This straightforward method places significant pressure on consistency across the entire campaign.
Movement between tiers is strictly regulated. The bottom three finishers in the Premier League are relegated to the Big League. Conversely, promotion from the second tier involves automatic advancement for the top two sides, while the third-placed team enters a playoff to contest the final promotion spot. This mechanism ensures competitive integrity between the two highest levels of Ugandan football.
SC Villa holds the record for the most titles in the league's history with 17 championships. Vipers SC currently leads the standings after securing the 2024–25 season, marking their seventh or eighth title depending on the source regarding the ongoing 2025–26 campaign. The competition has witnessed significant historical moments, including a disputed 22–1 fixture in 2002/03 that was nullified due to match-fixing allegations. Another notable event was the 1994 Masaka Clash between SC Villa and Express FC. The league's all-time leading scorer is Majid Musisi, who has netted 113 goals.
The competition was originally established in 1968 with the aim of improving national team performance. It has undergone several name changes, transitioning from the National First Division League to the Super League before adopting its current title. The official online presence for the league is located at upl.co.ug.
