The competition stands as the highest echelon of Mauritanian football, operating under the banner of Super D1 or Ligue 1 Mauritania. It sits at Level 1 of the national pyramid, governed by the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (FFRIM). The structure relies on a double round-robin format where teams play home and away fixtures against one another.
AC Douane, Chemal, Gendrim, Inter Nouakchott, Kaédi, and Ksar are among the clubs vying for supremacy within this framework. The participants number varies by season, but the 2025–26 campaign saw a return to a standard format following previous expansions that included non-eligible guest teams.
FC Nouadhibou holds the record for success, securing 14 titles as of the conclusion of the 2025–26 season. This dominance places them ahead of other historical winners such as ASC Garde Nationale and ASC Police, who have each claimed seven championships. ACS Ksar has also established a significant presence, winning five titles.
The league’s primary objective is to determine the national champion, who earns a spot in the CAF Champions League. This distinguishes it from the Mauritanian President’s Cup, a separate knockout tournament whose winner qualifies for the CAF Confederation Cup. The respective winners of these two competitions meet in the Mauritanian Super Cup.
Relegation is a tangible risk, with two teams typically dropping down to the Super D2 division. The competition has faced interruptions in the past due to political instability, yet it remains the central stage for domestic football in Mauritania. Unlike some leagues, it lacks a long-standing official title sponsor, though broadcast references sometimes include commercial partners. The league's history includes various suspensions, but it continues to operate as the premier football entity in the country.
