About

The Pakistan Premier League, also known as the Pakistan Premier Football League, functioned as the top tier of the national football pyramid until its suspension. Founded in 2004 by the Pakistan Football Federation, the competition replaced the National Football Championship, which had operated as a knockout tournament since 1948. Initially named the National A Division Football League, the entity was renamed the Pakistan Premier League in 2005.

The season structure followed a double round-robin format, requiring teams to play each other twice, once at home and once away. The number of participating clubs varied between seasons, ranging from twelve to sixteen. Within this structure, promotion and relegation links existed with the second-tier PFF League. Typically, the top two teams from the lower division were promoted, while the bottom two sides from the Premier League were relegated.

Historically, the league was dominated by departmental and armed forces entities. Clubs such as Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), WAPDA, the Pakistan Army, and the Pakistan Air Force secured the majority of titles. Private clubs like Karachi United and Humma struggled to compete at this level. KRL stands as the most successful club with five titles, including victories in 2009, 2011, 2012–13, 2013–14, and 2018–19. The last officially recognized champion was KRL for the 2018–19 season.

The league faced multiple suspensions driven by governance issues within the PFF and FIFA sanctions. The 2021–22 season was abandoned and declared null and void. As of 2025, the PPL is inactive, and no official top-tier professional league operates in the country. The governing body’s official website is pff.com.pk.
