About

The Lesotho Premier League, currently branded as the Vodacom Premier League, operates as the highest level of professional football in the country. Organised by the Lesotho Football Association under the Premier League Management Committee, the competition sits at Level 1 of the national pyramid. The tournament features a double round-robin format where sixteen clubs play each other twice, resulting in thirty matches per team. The structure ensures that the champion is determined solely by the highest points total, with no playoffs involved.

Distinct from the league are domestic knockout competitions such as the Independence Cup, which involves the top four league teams, and the MGC Supa 8, featuring the top eight. The league winner secures a place in the CAF Champions League. The competition has undergone various name changes due to sponsorship, including the Buddie Premier League and the Econet Premier League, with the current title sponsorship running from 2021. A notable recent reform includes the launch of the People’s Cup in 2025 to increase community engagement.

Matlama FC holds the record for the most titles with eleven, followed by LDF with ten. Lioli FC, one of the current participating clubs, won the previous season. Promotion and relegation link the Premier League to the second tier, the Lesotho A-Division, also known as the National First Division. The bottom two teams in the Premier League are relegated, while the top two teams from the A-Division are promoted, although the second tier involves regional streams and a playoff system for promotion spots.
