About

The Premier Soccer League stands as the top tier of Zimbabwe’s football pyramid. It operates under a double round-robin format, requiring each of the eighteen clubs to play thirty-four matches between April and November. The structure ensures competitive balance across the season, with the bottom four teams facing relegation to Zimbabwe Division One. Conversely, the four regional winners from the second tier secure promotion to this elite level. This system distinguishes it from other competitions, as only the league champion qualifies for the CAF Champions League. The domestic cup winner, by contrast, enters the CAF Confederation Cup, creating a clear separation of European pathways.

The competition was established in 1980 by the Zimbabwe Football Association following independence. It succeeded the Rhodesia National Football League, which had operated since 1962. Dynamos F.C. holds the record for the most titles, winning twenty-one championships since the league's inception. Recent winners include Simba Bhora in 2024 and Scottland in 2025, the latter achieving victory in their debut season. The league is currently known as the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League due to sponsorship by Delta Beverages. While pre-independence champions featured Dynamos and Bulawayo Rovers, the modern era sees Dynamos as the dominant force. The competition remains distinct from domestic cups like the Munhumutapa Cup, which follows a different qualification route. The focus remains on the league title as the primary route to continental football.
