About

The competition known as the Primera División de Ascenso, also referred to as the Segunda División de Ascenso, constitutes the second tier of professional football in Guatemala. Founded in 1942, originally under the name Liga Mayor 'B', it sits below the top-flight Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala. The league features 20 teams divided into two groups of ten, Group A and Group B. The season operates on an Apertura/Clausura basis. The top three teams from each group advance to promotion playoffs to determine which club earns promotion to the Liga Nacional. Conversely, the bottom two teams from each group enter relegation playoffs against each other, with the losers relegated to the third tier, the Tercera División. Clubs competing in this division include Coatepecano IB, Democracia, Iztapa, Juventud Copalera, La Libertad, and Nueva Concepción. The league is administered by the Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala (FEDEFUT). The term 'Primera División' is often colloquially used for the top league, but technically refers to the second tier in this context of 'Ascenso'. The most successful club in the modern history of the second tier is widely considered to be Deportivo Mixco, which has won multiple titles in the 'Torneos Cortos' era. Other notable recent champions include Deportivo Marquense and Aguacatán FC, who won the 2024-25 Apertura title. The top-flight Liga Nacional is distinct from this second-tier competition, serving as the primary domestic championship for continental qualification, while the second tier serves as the pathway for promotion.
