About

The Sapling Cup was a pre-season football tournament in Hong Kong, organized by the Football Association of Hong Kong, China. It served as a youth development platform, distinct from senior competitions by its requirement for clubs to field a minimum number of Under-22 players. The event was contested by teams from the Hong Kong Premier League, with participant numbers varying between eight and ten.

Founded in 2015, the competition ran for nearly a decade before being discontinued following the 2024–25 season. Southern District FC were named the final champions. The format underwent several changes, beginning with group stages and semi-finals, shifting to a single-elimination knockout in 2016–17, and later adopting double round-robin groups. Sponsors included the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Henderson Group, and R&F Properties, leading to various冠名 titles throughout its history.

Kitchee SC and Southern District FC were the most successful clubs, each winning two titles. Other winners included Tai Po FC, Lee Man FC, Eastern SC, Hong Kong Rangers FC, and Sun Pegasus. The tournament operated alongside the Hong Kong Senior Shield and the HKFA Cup, which remained senior knockout competitions without youth quotas. The cessation of the Sapling Cup coincided with the revival of the HKFA League Cup for the 2025–26 season, which operates as a senior competition with a double-elimination format and no youth restrictions.
