About

The Second Division stands as the second tier of Cypriot football. It sits directly below the Top Flight and above the Third Division, administered by the Cyprus Football Association. The competition traces its roots to the 1934–35 season when it began as an unofficial tournament featuring reserve teams. It transformed into a standalone championship in 1953–54 after football unification excluded those reserve sides.

The structure has shifted many times over the decades. From geographical groupings until 1968, the league moved to a single division format. Special arrangements occurred during political turmoil, including a mixed championship in 1974–75. The modern era settled into a two-group split in 2013–14. Since the 2022–23 season, the league has comprised sixteen teams.

The current season runs on a two-stage model. Teams play each other once in a regular stage. The field then splits into two groups of eight for a Promotion Round and a Relegation Round. Points from the initial phase carry over into these secondary contests. Teams play each other twice in this second stage. There are no playoff matches involved.

Outcome determination is straightforward. The top three teams in the Promotion Round secure automatic promotion to the First Division. The bottom three teams in the Relegation Round drop down to the Third Division. This structure ensures clear movement between tiers without additional knockout fixtures.

Historical dominance belongs to clubs from Paphos. APOP Paphos and Evagoras Paphos have each won the title six times. Aris Limassol and Nea Salamis Famagusta follow with five victories each. The current champion is Krasava Ypsonas, who secured the title by finishing first in the Promotion Round. The division distinguishes itself from the national cup through its league format rather than a knockout tournament.
