The Hong Kong Senior Shield stands as the oldest football knockout cup competition in Asia. Founded in 1895 as the Hong Kong Football Cup by the Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC), the tournament underwent a name change to the Hong Kong Challenge Shield in 1896. It split into Senior and Junior divisions during the 1922–23 season. Organized by the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA), the competition serves as a domestic cup for top-tier clubs.
The format operates as a single-leg knockout tournament. Recent editions have involved between nine and ten teams, with draws settled via extra time and penalties. South China AA holds the record for success, having won the trophy 31 times. The current holder is Tai Po FC, who secured the 2025–26 final against Rangers FC 4–1 after extra time.
While the Hong Kong FA Cup, founded in 1974, carries higher prize money and is considered the modern primary cup, the Senior Shield remains the historical legacy trophy. Winning this competition does not grant promotion or relegation status. Historically, it provided AFC continental qualification, though current rules prioritize the FA Cup winner for AFC Champions League Two spots. The competition sits alongside the league system but remains distinct from the FA Cup in prestige and financial reward.
Participants in the current season include North District, Rangers FC, Warriors, Southern District, Sham Shui Po, and Kitchee. These clubs compete for a title with deep roots in the region's sporting history. The tournament continues to operate within the framework established over a century ago, maintaining its unique position among Asian football competitions.
