The Somali Premier League, currently known as the Somali First Division, sits at the apex of the national football structure. Founded in 1967 by the Somali Football Federation, it has endured significant disruption over the decades. The competition ceased operation during the civil war between 1991 and 1993 and experienced further gaps in 2008 and 2013 before its revival in 2010.
The league operates with 12 clubs competing in a double round-robin format. Each side plays 22 matches against every other participant. The structure includes promotion and relegation, with two teams dropping to the Somali Second Division and two rising from it. The Second Division serves as the feeder for the First Division, while the Third Division occupies the level below.
Mogadishu City Club holds the record for the most titles, securing 10 championships when combining its own victories with those of its predecessors, Mogadishu Municipality and Banaadir Telecom. Horseed FC follows with eight titles. The 2024/25 season crowned Mogadishu City Club as champions. A notable change occurred in the 2020–21 campaign when a playoff was introduced to resolve a dead heat between Horseed SC and Mogadishu City Club, a format Horseed SC won after the latter defaulted.
The league is distinct from the Somalia Cup, officially the General Da'ud Cup, which was established in 1972 as the primary knockout tournament. Additionally, the Somalia Super Cup, launched in 2013, pits the league winner against the cup winner. The competition’s identity is shaped by its survival through prolonged conflict and its specific approach to aggregating historical titles from affiliated clubs.
