About

The competition known as the Úrvalsdeild kvenna operates as the premier women's football league in Iceland. It holds the status of Level 1 in the national pyramid and was established in 1972 by the Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ). In 2022, the tournament underwent a rebranding to become the Besta deild kvenna, aligning the terminology with the men's top flight while maintaining its distinct identity for female athletes. The structure of the season begins with a regular phase where all participating clubs engage in a double round-robin format. This results in eighteen matches for every team. Following this initial period, the league divides into two separate competitions based on standings. The upper half of the table enters the Championship Round, known as Meistarakeppni, where teams contest for the national title and spots in the UEFA Champions League. The lower half enters the Qualifying Round, or Niðurstigakeppni, a battle to avoid relegation. Breiðablik stands as the most successful entity in the league's history, having secured twenty championships. Valur follows closely behind with fourteen titles. The current reigning champions are Breiðablik, a position they hold from the previous campaign. The league composition has stabilised at ten clubs since 2017, differing slightly from the twelve-team structure of the men's equivalent. Relegation is a serious consequence for those finishing at the bottom of the Qualifying Round. Two clubs are automatically demoted to the 1. deild kvenna, which serves as the second tier of Icelandic women's football. This movement ensures that performance in the top division directly impacts the future of the participating organisations.
