About

V.League 1 is the top-flight professional football league in Vietnam, operating under a corporate governance model managed by the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF). The competition traces its roots to 1980, when it began as the National A1 League before undergoing professionalisation and rebranding in 2000. It replaced a post-reunification regional system that had operated between 1976 and 1979, marking a shift towards a unified national structure.

The current season features 14 clubs, including Binh Duong, Công An Nhân Dân, Da Nang, Ha Noi FC, Hai Phong, and Ho Chi Minh City. The format follows a double round-robin structure, requiring teams to play 26 matches each. This standard arrangement was reinstated in 2023, ending a unique split-season era that ran from 2016 to 2022. During that period, teams were divided into Championship and Relegation groups based on their mid-table positions.

Consequences for performance are distinct from many neighbouring Asian leagues. The team finishing in 14th place faces direct relegation to V.League 2. The club in 13th position enters a two-legged play-off against the runner-up from the second tier. The V.League 2 champion secures automatic promotion. This structure ensures a clear pathway between the divisions without relying solely on financial criteria.

Historical success is shared between Hanoi FC and Thể Công–Viettel FC, with both organisations claiming six titles. Becamex Bình Dương holds the record for the most titles with five wins. The current champions are Công An Hà Nội, who secured their third league title following victories in 2023–24 and 2024–25. The competition operates independently of the Vietnamese Cup, which uses a knockout format, and the AFC Champions League, which is a continental event. Sponsorship names have changed frequently, reflecting the commercial nature of the VPF model.
