El Geysh lose league lead as Masr hold on despite red card
El Geysh and Masr met in the third round of the Premier League on Tuesday, and the visitors took all three points with a 0:1 win. The decisive moment came in the 87th minute when O. Khedr struck to break El Geysh's resistance. The hosts had dominated the early exchanges, but Masr held firm after the visitors were reduced to ten men.
The match turned on events just before half-time. A. Wahid collected a yellow card in the 18th minute, and by the 45+1st minute he had already picked up a second booking and a red. Masr were reduced to ten men in the 46th minute when A. Gouda was substituted, a tactical change that coincided with the red card.
El Geysh pushed hard for an equaliser after the break, creating one big chance but failing to convert. Their possession sat at 42 per cent, yet they registered four shots on target from ten attempts inside the penalty area. Masr, meanwhile, managed only three shots on target from eight attempts, with expected goals of 1.17 to their side.
Both sides made heavy use of substitutions. El Geysh brought on M. Hajij in the 59th minute and Abdelrahman El Sakran in the 65th, while Masr introduced M. Atef and F. Hatem in the 63rd minute. The game ended with nine changes between the two sides combined.
El Geysh remain top of the table with six points from two games, their fourth straight win extending a strong start to the season. Masr move to 17th place with a single point, their first point of the campaign after a goalless draw against Wadi Degla.
The statistics tell a story of El Geysh's dominance without control. They completed 288 passes with 212 successful, while Masr managed 404 total passes with 337 successful. The hosts created more attacks — 73 to 86 — but Masr's deeper defensive shape held firm through the final twenty minutes.
What matters most is that Masr held on after being reduced to ten men. They did not travel to make up the numbers, and they showed enough organisation to protect a narrow lead. El Geysh will take comfort from their position at the top, but three points away from home is never easy to come by.
