Girona and Leganes Share Points in Season Opener
Girona and Leganes played out a 1:1 draw in the opening round of the Segunda División at Estadi Montilivi on Saturday. The hosts took a late first-half lead only for the visitors to respond in stoppage time, leaving both sides with a single point each after the first match of the campaign.
N. Garcia opened the scoring in the 48th minute, and it was the only goal of the match for nearly an hour. Girona kept knocking on the door after that, but Leganes' defence held firm. To be fair, the visitors had already shown resilience in their previous outings, and they carried that into this fixture.
A. Ruiz equalised in the 90th minute, and the result was confirmed before the final whistle. There were five yellow cards in total — Min-su Kim, Marvel, Fran Beltrán, Ignasi Miquel and Rubén Pulido all picked up bookings. By then, both managers had made heavy changes, with eight substitutions called for across the two sides.
Girona controlled 69 per cent of possession and registered 156 attacks, yet they created 2.09 expected goals and converted just one. Leganes, with 31 per cent possession and 44 attacks, produced 0.58 expected goals and scored once. Shots accuracy tells the story — 26 per cent for Girona against 60 per cent for the visitors.
Girona sit 10th with four points from three games, while Leganes occupy second place on eight points from four matches. The draw does little to separate them in any real sense, and both sides will be looking to build from this opening weekend.
