Football on Tenerife began with a scatter of small sides in Santa Cruz. The date the club itself recognises, following a commission it set up in 2008, is 21 November 1912.

For most of the century that followed, the island watched its team from the second tier. The Segunda División title of 1960/61 stands alone in the record as the first sign of a club capable of holding a place among the bigger names.

The run that people on the island still measure everything against began in 1989 and lasted a decade. Jorge Valdano took charge in 1991 and, with Fernando Redondo in midfield, turned a promoted side into one that reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey in 1993/94. Three seasons later came the UEFA Cup semi-final of 1996/97, lost to Schalke 04. Rafael Benítez arrived later, in 2001, the season Hugo Morales scored the winner in the final match.

Eight Canary Islands championships sit in the honours list, which is a reminder that for decades the meaningful football was regional. The rivalry with UD Las Palmas comes from the same period and has outlasted it.

Home is the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, cut into the slope above the port in Santa Cruz, holding 22 824 with an expansion to 25 000 planned for 2026. The white shirts and blue shorts are the island's flag.
