The Segunda División, currently branded as LaLiga HyperMotion for sponsorship reasons, operates as the second tier of the Spanish football league system. It sits directly below the Primera División and above the Primera Federación. The competition distinguishes itself through its structure and promotion mechanics, which differ from the neighbouring top flight.

While the elite division features 20 teams and employs a straightforward system for relegation, the second tier comprises 22 clubs. This larger size necessitates a distinct approach to movement between the tiers. Each team plays 42 matches in a single-group double round-robin format. This configuration evolved from earlier multi-group arrangements that existed from 1934 until 1969. The current setup ensures every side faces each opponent twice over the course of the season.

Promotion to the top level is determined by final standing. The two highest-placed teams secure automatic advancement to La Liga. A third promotion place is decided through a play-off system. This involves the teams finishing in positions three through six. These four sides compete for the final spot, adding a layer of uncertainty to the end of the campaign. Conversely, relegation impacts the bottom four teams, who drop down to the Primera Federación.

The league was established in 1929 by the Royal Spanish Football Federation alongside the top flight. Its primary goal was to create a professional national structure. Since then, it has undergone numerous name changes due to commercial agreements. The competition also holds records for titles won. Real Murcia CF holds the record for the most championships with eight. The most recent champion is CD Leganés. The current season includes clubs such as AD Ceuta FC, Albacete, Almería, Burgos, Cadiz, and Castellón.
