Burgos

The fixture that fills El Plantío is the one against Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa, the derbi castellano y leonés — León against Burgos.

Burgos have spent the 2025–26 season in the Segunda División. That conversion was finally completed in 2017. Four years later, a play-off win over Bilbao Athletic returned them to the second tier.

El Plantío holds a little over 12,000. The shirts are white with black flashes down the sides, black shorts, and gold kept back for anniversary kits and badges. The arlequinados nickname does not come from those colours at all — for years the club played in red and white squares, close enough to a harlequin's costume for the name to stick after the pattern went.

Two players anchor the modern era. Lucio, a Brazilian defender, stayed ten years and played 316 matches between 1997 and 2007; the goalkeeper Aurreko lasted longer still, thirteen seasons to 2017. Before both of them, Pedro María Artola kept goal here in the 1970s, left for Barcelona and was called into the Spain squad for the 1980 European Championship.

The club that Artola played for no longer exists. Founded in 1922 and also known as Gimnástica Burgalesa, it was wound up on 24 May 1983, insolvent by 250 million pesetas after an administrative demotion the previous year. The present Burgos CF was set up on 13 August 1985 to succeed it, then waited until 1994 to enter competition at all — starting in the Primera Provincial, six divisions down.
