Andrés Iniesta spent two seasons in Albacete's youth ranks in the mid-1990s before Barcelona took him on. Nobody at the club could have guessed that the boy would come back as its owner. In 2011 he put in 420,000 euros to become the majority shareholder, then returned two years later with a further 240,000 euros to keep the club from going under. It is the kind of gesture that turns a boyhood stop into something closer to home.

The club itself was stitched together on 1 June 1939 from three local sides — Albacete Foot-ball Club, Sociedad Deportiva Albacetense and Club Deportivo Nacional — and only became a legal entity the following year, signed off in the Café Colón. Under Franco's drive to Castilianise club names, it took the name Albacete Balompié in 1941. The nickname Los Manolos traces back to the city's shoemaking trade; a second one, "El Queso Mecánico" — the Mechanical Cheese — nods both to the region's cheese and, more pointedly, to the Dutch "clockwork orange" sides of the 1970s.

Albacete has never settled comfortably at the top of Spanish football. It reached La Liga twice: a five-season run through the 1990s and a shorter spell from 2003 to 2005. In between there was a year, 1951/52, when the club could not even field a team in the league for lack of money — a reminder of how thin the margins have often been here. The best domestic run came in the 1994/95 season, when the team reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey; three decades on, in 2025/26, it reached the quarter-finals again.

Home games are played at the Estadio Municipal Carlos Belmonte, and the biggest rivalry now runs against CF Fuenlabrada. The trophy cabinet leans toward the lower divisions: eight Tercera División titles between 1947 and 1982, and Segunda División B championships in 1990, 2014 and 2017. Only once, in 1990/91, has Albacete been crowned champion of the Segunda División itself.
