FC Cartagena

The club playing under that name today was formed on 25 July 1995, picking up where an earlier Cartagonova Fútbol Club had left off. It has spent almost its entire existence working through Spain's third tier rather than above it, and the record shows why: group titles in Segunda B arrived in 2005–06, 2008–09 and 2019–20, each one a ticket into Segunda rather than a trophy in itself. Two promotion play-offs, in 2013–14 and 2018–19, went the other way and cost the club a faster route up.

La Liga has never seen Efesé, and the Copa del Rey has given it only one night worth remembering, a last-32 tie against Barcelona in 2013–14. Home matches are played at the Estadio Municipal Cartagonova, which holds 15,105, in the black-and-white stripes that give the club its other nickname, Albinegros.

The rivalry with Murcia predates the current club by decades, reaching back to the earlier Cartagonova side that folded before Efesé rose in its place.
