Erling Haaland's Double Sinks Porto for Man City

Haaland scored twice as Manchester City beat Porto 2-0, giving Enzo Maresca a first Champions League win as head coach in a tense clash.

Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City beat FC Porto 2-0 at the Estadio do Dragao, and afterwards he had a message for his new Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Haaland got the opener two minutes into the second half, after Diogo Costa had denied him twice in a wasteful first half. He added a second in stoppage time to seal Enzo Maresca's first Champions League win as City head coach, and his fourth win from four games since taking over.

Bouaddi started ahead of the more experienced Elliot Anderson in the holding role and, by all accounts, did well there. Asked for his verdict on the debutant afterwards, Haaland turned the question into a running joke about a missed pass.

'I think he had a really good game,' Haaland said.

Porto fielded Jan Bednarek, the Polish defender who joined the club in October 2024 and has scored three times since, at the back as the hosts grew into the game after the break, with Alan Varela curling just wide and Ederson nearly caught in possession by William Gomes. The night also turned ill-tempered, with players said to have been separated in the tunnel.

Haaland's frustration over the pass was plainly good-humoured, but with Bouaddi's promise now confirmed by a senior teammate on the record, Maresca may be more inclined to trust the teenager ahead of Anderson as City's Champions League campaign continues.
