Mykhailo Mudryk faces two months out with ankle injury

Days after his first Tottenham appearance in nearly two years, Mudryk suffers a training injury that could sideline him for up to six matches.

Mykhailo Mudryk faces up to two months on the sidelines after injuring an ankle in training, four days after finally making his first Premier League appearance in almost two years.

The 25-year-old winger came on in the 74th minute of Tottenham's goalless draw at Nottingham Forest on Saturday, his first competitive football since a doping ban took him out of the game in November 2024. It lasted 16 minutes. The new setback means he will miss Saturday's fixture against Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and is not expected back before the international break.

Spurs then play Liverpool and Aston Villa before that break, and return against Manchester United at Old Trafford on 10 October. A trip to Chelsea, his parent club, follows later in the month, but Premier League loan rules bar him from facing the side that sent him out. On the worst-case timeline, an eight-week absence would rule him out of six or seven matches in all.

Mudryk had joined Tottenham on loan from Chelsea, with an option to buy at the end of the season, in search of a fresh start under Roberto De Zerbi, who previously worked with him at Shakhtar Donetsk. De Zerbi had already urged patience, saying it would take time for the Ukrainian to rediscover his best physical condition. That process must now begin again.

The blow lands at an awkward moment for De Zerbi's squad. Richarlison was left out after asking to leave in the summer, while Mikey Moore went out on loan to Cologne once Mudryk signed on deadline day. Xavi Simons and Wilson Odobert remain out with serious knee injuries and are not expected back this year, and James Maddison, also recovering from a knee injury, has not started since picking up a shoulder problem against Brentford on the opening weekend. Dejan Kulusevski, according to Sweden coach Graham Potter, is "very close" to returning from his own long-term knee injury. Against Everton, De Zerbi is left choosing from Dominic Solanke, Omar Marmoush, Mathys Tel, Savinho and Mohamed Kudus up front.
