Cagliari's Trepy Cleared to Train After Drowning Scare

Yael Trepy has been cleared to resume training with Cagliari, a month after a near-drowning in a swimming pool in Sardinia left him in an induced coma.

He was intubated at the scene and airlifted to the SS. Annunziata hospital in Sassari, where doctors confirmed the early stages of drowning and placed him in a medically induced coma to clear the water from his lungs.

He spent ten days in intensive care before his condition improved enough for him to be discharged and continue his recovery at home, under the joint care of his family and the club's medical staff. Further tests followed at a hospital in Arco, in the province of Trento, and then at the Centro Cardiologico Monzino in Milan, where cardiac checks showed no lasting damage to his heart or brain.

The club said it would take a gradual approach to his return, working through small steps and assessing his responses at each stage, so there is no date yet for when he will train fully or play again.

Trepy joined Cagliari's youth academy in 2023 and had started the club's opening Coppa Italia match of the season before the accident, with a Serie A appearance also pencilled in.
