Dmitry Alenichev returns as Arsenal Tula head coach

Alenichev takes charge of Arsenal Tula for a second time on a one-year deal, seven years after his last Russian club job, replacing Dmitry Gunko.

Dmitry Alenichev has returned as head coach of Tula's Arsenal, the club confirmed on its website and Telegram channel, taking the job for a second time after it was vacated by Dmitry Gunko.

The deal runs initially for one season. "The contract length is for now one year, until the end of the season. But of course with the possibility of extension," Arsenal general director Valery Grinkovsky told Match TV.

Alenichev, 53, first took charge of Arsenal in 2011 and stayed until 2015, taking the club from the amateur leagues into the Russian Premier League for the first time in its history — 59 wins from 112 official matches along the way. He went on to coach Spartak Moscow in 2015-16 and Krasnoyarsk side Yenisey from 2017 to 2019, and has been out of work since leaving that post, meaning this is his first job at a Russian club in seven years.

As a player Alenichev won the Russian championship four times and the Russian Cup twice with Spartak, then lifted the Champions League and the UEFA Cup with Porto, scoring in both finals.

Arsenal currently sit 10th in the Pari League after 11 rounds, on 13 points.
