Thompson strike sinks Arsenal as Chelsea win WSL derby

Chelsea beat Arsenal 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, Alyssa Thompson's first-half finish settling a derby that has decided little else so far this season. The result stretched Chelsea's unbeaten WSL run to 12 games and left them two points off leaders Manchester City. Arsenal, seven points off the top, sit seventh.

It was Chelsea's third successive clean sheet, a run now standing at 315 minutes without conceding. Sonia Bompastor's side began the campaign shakily, held 1-1 by Aston Villa despite dominating the ball, and have since won three straight, this one built on defending with composure rather than chasing the game.

Bompastor said her players were ready to "mentally fight" and adjust to the pressure Arsenal brought, in a way she felt they had not managed last term, when City ended Chelsea's six-year hold on the title.

Katie McCabe faced her former club for the first time since leaving Arsenal after 11 years there, though the afternoon belonged to Chelsea's defensive discipline rather than any individual duel.

Renée Slegers played down any alarm afterwards. "Worried? No," she said, adding that confidence fluctuates across a season and that her side know what they can bring. She said it was important to keep pressure and complexity away from the players and preserve clear minds and simplicity in how the team works.

Arsenal's summer recruitment, including the signing of France defender Élisa De Almeida from PSG earlier this month, had fuelled expectations they would be City's main challengers. A first WSL title in eight years now looks further away, with Chelsea, so recently written off themselves, the ones showing the sharper edge.
