About the player
The season took him to France, where Metz signed him in January 2015.
Ikaunieks made 12 senior appearances and 14 for the reserve side, and loan spells at Larisa in Greece and back at Liepāja. He scored 9 and then 7 goals over the following two seasons, before a move to Norway's Strømsgodset in February 2020 was cut short — the contract was ended by mutual consent after six appearances without a goal.
A return to Latvia followed within months. At Rīgas FS he scored 7 goals in 14 matches to close out 2020, then moved on to KuPS in Finland, where 2022 brought 34 appearances, 16 goals and a place in the Veikkausliiga team of the year.
He was named the best footballer in Latvia in both of those years.
He made his national team debut against Turkey in October 2014, and at 19 years, 7 months and 25 days matched Māris Verpakovskis's record as the youngest player to debut for Latvia. He has since won the Baltic Cup twice with the national side and featured in World Cup 2026 qualifying matches against England and Serbia.
