About the player
What stands out about Matt Freese's path to New York City FC is his time at Harvard. Cut from the Philadelphia Union academy as a teenager, he kept playing through the Penn Fusion academy and FC Europa, then enrolled at Harvard, where he played for the Crimson through 2019.
Philadelphia signed him as a homegrown player, and his rise there was gradual rather than immediate: six league appearances in his first season, six more in 2021, and a 2022 campaign spent largely with the reserve side, Union II, in MLS Next Pro. New York City FC traded for him in January 2023, and the move reshaped his career. After ten appearances in his first season at the club, Freese became NYCFC's first-choice goalkeeper in 2024, starting all 34 league matches and being named the club's Player of the Season.
He has since been called up by the United States national team.
