Matyas Vagner

Matyáš Vágner spent four years learning his trade in the shadow of Slavia Praha's senior goalkeepers, and in March 2021, with Ondřej Kolář injured, he was thrown on during a Europa League tie against Rangers and kept a clean sheet for the rest of the match. Three weeks later, playing for Slavia against Brno, he was sent off for a foul outside his penalty area.

Vágner never established himself as Slavia's regular goalkeeper. Across the 2020/21 season he made only two league appearances and the one European outing, and by the time Slavia lifted the Czech league title and cup that year, he was not even named among the substitutes for the cup final. The bulk of his football in this period came away from Prague.

A loan to Vlašim in July 2021 gave him the games Slavia could not. Over three seasons in the Czech second tier he made close to eighty appearances and kept sixteen clean sheets, the kind of workload that builds a goalkeeper rather than a squad number.

In July 2024, Slavia let him go permanently, and Vágner signed for Hradec Králové. The move has not yet brought him first-team football: he sits third in the goalkeeping pecking order behind Patrik Vízek and Adam Zadražil, and much of his game time since arriving has come with the club's reserve side in the third division.

At youth level, Vágner worked his way through the Czech age groups from under-16 to under-21, making sixteen appearances in total without conceding a goal for those sides, but he has yet to be called into the senior national team.
