About the player
Vicente Poggi Sassi is best known in Argentina for two afternoons that went in opposite directions. The first was against River Plate, when he scored both goals in Godoy Cruz's 2-1 win, the second of them after seizing on an error by goalkeeper Franco Armani. The second came in the 2025 Clausura against Rosario Central, where he accidentally trod on the foot of Ángel Di María and injured him. The players exchanged conciliatory words afterwards.
Across the 2020 and 2021 seasons he played 24 matches and scored twice — enough for Mexican side Necaxa to pay one million euros for him in May 2021, with Defensor keeping 20 per cent of any future sale.
Mexico did not settle into a straight line. Poggi spent 2021-22 on loan at Atlético Morelia , where he played 20 matches, and his total in the Mexican league for Necaxa came to 35 appearances.
He arrived at Godoy Cruz on loan in February 2024, and the move was made permanent that June for an undisclosed fee. By March 2026 he had made 57 appearances for the club and scored four goals. He has been sent off for simulation in a match against Acassuso. He has also spoken publicly about testing positive for COVID-19.
