W. Fofana

Fofana's move to Chelsea in August 2022 was built on the reputation he had already earned at Leicester City, where he established himself as a centre-back after arriving from Saint-Étienne. Chelsea paid an initial £70 million, with a further £5 million in potential add-ons taking the total to £75 million, a fee that reflected how highly the club rated the player Saint-Étienne had first introduced to senior football during the 2019–20 season, when he made 20 appearances before his move to England.

Injuries have shaped much of his time in London. Surgery in July 2023 kept him out for the majority of the 2023–24 season, and a hamstring injury in December 2024 required a further operation, ruling him out for the remainder of the 2024–25 campaign. Between those setbacks he made 37 appearances for Leicester and has continued to wear the number 3 shirt at Chelsea.

Internationally, Fofana came through the France youth system, winning seven caps at Under-21 level before earning his first senior call-up. He made his debut for the senior side on 22 September 2022, in a UEFA Nations League match against Austria. He has not yet featured at a major tournament with France.

Born in Marseille, Fofana began his youth career with a string of local clubs — Repos Vitrolles, Bassin Minier, Pennes Mirabeau and Bel Air — before joining Saint-Étienne's academy in 2015, the pathway that eventually led him through Leicester and on to Chelsea.
