1. FC Passau has one championship that still defines it: the Landesliga Niederbayern title of 1967/68, sealed with a 3:1 win over TSV Straubing in the Niederbayern-Pokal final and followed by promotion to the Bayernliga. The club stayed at that level long enough to finish fourth in 1973/74, its best placing in Bavaria's top amateur flight.
Relegation eventually returned Passau to the regional ranks, and it took until 1991/92, fifteen years on, for the Landesliga Mitte title to send the club back up to the Bayernliga.
Founded on 1 February 1911, the club has played in red and white throughout. Eduard Kirschner, the Bayernliga's top scorer in 1975/76, stayed on afterwards as player and then coach; Jerzy Wostal, a Polish Olympian from the 1936 Berlin Games, wore the shirt between 1945 and 1954; Markus Weinzierl came through the youth section before building a coaching career in the Bundesliga.
The closest rivalry is the Passauer Derby against FC Sturm Hauzenberg, with games against DJK Vornbach and Niederbayern neighbours SpVgg Landshut and SV Grainet carrying similar weight locally. Passau plays at the Dreiflüssestadion, where a rebuild in 2015 and 2016 brought capacity down to 6,000.
