In April 2004, Al-Ittihad went into the second leg of the AFC Champions League final needing to overturn a 1-3 home defeat to Seongnam. In South Korea they won 5-0, taking the trophy 6-3 on aggregate, with Hamza Idris among the scorers and the sacked Tomislav Ivić having been replaced as coach mid-campaign. A year later the club defended the title, beating Al-Ain 5-3 in the final under Anghel Iordănescu, with Mohammed Kallon finishing as the competition's top scorer.
The club was formed in Jeddah on 26 December 1927, making it the oldest sports club still active in the country. Domestically, Al-Ittihad has won the Saudi Premier League ten times. The first title came in 1982, the most recent in 2025. The King's Cup has been won six times, the Crown Prince Cup eight, the last of those in 2017.
Home matches are played at King Abdullah Sports City, known locally as Al-Jawhara, which holds some 62,000 spectators. Mohammed Noor, who spent more than two decades at the club, was named best player of the 2004 Champions League run. Karim Benzema and Fabinho arrived in 2023.
