Yeosu sits on the south coast, and 2012 gave the port city its own football team at the same time the city marked 1,400 years since its founding — the anniversary is written into the club's origin, not tacked on after it. Areum FC took the name and the timing together, and the fifth-tier K5 League Jeonnam Division has been its level of competition since.
The club plays as Yeosu Areum FC, though its full registered name, Jeonnam Yeosu Si Areum FC, points to the wider province behind the city. It also enters the Korean FA Cup each season, the one competition where a team from this tier can, in theory, be drawn against clubs several divisions above.
Jang Min-Ho has worn the number 27 shirt for the club, one of the names that keeps turning up on Areum's teamsheets in a division where rosters change hard and fast from one year to the next.
Home games are played at Yeosu Mangma Stadium, a ground built for a city, not for a fifth-tier crowd: it holds 17,750.
