«The Town»
Ashton Town go into the North West Counties League Division One North: promotion back to that division came in 2018, a year after relegation to the Cheshire League.
The present set-up traces back to 1953, when the side began under the name Makerfield Mill before taking the Ashton Town name in 1962. What the club built in its early decades was mostly local silverware: six Warrington & District League Division One titles between 1960 and 1970, a St Helens Combination Division Two championship in 1958, and the Liverpool FA Shield in 1957.
Ashton Athletic sit across town as the club's fiercest rival, and the fixture between the two, known simply as the Ashton Derby, draws crowds the rest of the calendar does not.
The ground itself, Edge Green Street, has been Ashton Town's own since 1964, when the club bought the site outright rather than renting it as many at this level still do. It holds 2,000, a capacity tested only once in any real sense: 1,865 turned up in 2007 for a visit from FC United of Manchester, still the record attendance and a reminder of how far outside the ordinary run of fixtures that day fell for a ground more used to Cheshire and Lancashire league gates.
