Every meeting with Billericay Town gets called the Essex derby.

That name has changed four times. Braintree Town began life in 1898 as Manor Works, the works team of the Crittall Window Company, a maker of iron and glass fittings — hence "The Iron", a nickname the club has kept long after the factory link was cut. It became Crittall Athletic in 1921, then Braintree & Crittall Athletic in 1968, before severing ties with the parent company altogether in 1981 to become Braintree F.C., settling on Braintree Town F.C. a year later.

Cressing Road itself was built by Crittall in 1923, and holds 4,222, with 553 of those seated. The club has never strayed far from non-league football, but its best runs have come in the FA Cup: a first appearance in the competition proper in 2005-06, then a first Second Round tie in 2016-17, ending in defeat to Millwall. On the domestic front, the National League South title arrived in 2010-11 and the Isthmian League Premier Division in 2005-06, either side of three Eastern Counties League championships stretching back to 1937.

Chris Guy scored 211 goals in the orange and blue, while Brad Quinton's 546 appearances say something about how long a player can stay attached to a club at this level. Braintree have also given a stage to passing names, among them Freddie Sears and the young Lyle Della-Verde, once on Tottenham Hotspur's books.

None of it changes much when Billericay come to Cressing Road.
