Bogotá, January 1984: Brazil's under-17s play their first match as a side, a 2-2 draw with Italy, and lose nothing by it. The following year they go to the inaugural FIFA U-16 World Championship and come third.
No club side wins the FIFA U-17 World Cup four times without a production line behind it, and Brazil's runs through Cotia, on the edge of São Paulo, where the Seleção Sub-17 trains at the São Paulo Futebol Clube's academy ground. There is no home ground in the ordinary sense — a national team goes where the tournament sends it — but Cotia is where the work happens between tournaments.
The titles themselves came in waves: 1997, 1999 and 2003 formed one run of world crowns before 2019 added a fourth, and in South America the record reads fourteen continental championships, most recently in 2025. Brazil and Argentina have made a rivalry of the age group the way they have of every other.
What the shirt has mostly been is a preview. Neymar wore it in 2009 the same way. Between them sits the whole point of the side — not a team built to be remembered for its own results, but one built to be forgotten once the names on it stop needing an under-17 shirt at all.
