The Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura took its present shape only after work finished in 2022, bringing capacity to around 22,000. It is there that the side known as the Fighting Swallows play in front of home crowds wrapped in the red, green and white of the flag.

The Football Federation of Burundi was founded in 1962 and joined FIFA and the Confederation of African Football a decade later, in 1972. The national team took the field for the first time on 9 October 1964 and lost 7-0 to Uganda. A win over Ghana in 1992 World Cup qualifying stood out early, when the Fighting Swallows qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time under coach Olivier Niyungeko. Cédric Amissi scored the goal that sealed it. The group stage in Egypt ended without a win, but reaching the tournament at all marked a first for the country. Regionally, the side has come closer to silverware: runners-up in the CECAFA Cup in 2004, beaten by Ethiopia, and again runners-up in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup in 2020.

Karim Nizigiyimana has worn the shirt more than anyone else, with 66 caps, while Fiston Abdul Razak stands as the side's all-time top scorer on 19 goals.
