Uruguay were the first opponent, in Caracas in March 1954, and the match finished 1-1. Colombia had come to Venezuela for the inaugural South American youth championship, and the continental tournament has shaped the side ever since: the titles that matter here were won against neighbours, in 1987, in 2005 and in 2013.
The name is a loose one. There is no permanent under-21 side; the age band exists for particular competitions, and the standing team is the under-20 group. Players who miss out on a World Cup squad turn up in the older bracket for tournaments such as the Central American and Caribbean Games.
Reinaldo Rueda took the under-20s to third place at the 2003 World Cup.
Eduardo Lara's 2005 continental winners included Radamel Falcao. James Rodríguez played in the 2011 side, Juan Fernando Quintero in the 2013 group that took the South American title.
Barranquilla, July 2018: gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games, Venezuela beaten 2-1 in the final through an own goal and a strike from Leonardo Castro before the half-hour. Julián Quiñones finished as the tournament's leading scorer with four.
