Duque de Caxias

The club that plays under the Duque de Caxias name today grew out of Tamoio Futebol Clube, a side founded in 1957 in the Baixada Fluminense city that shares its name with the Brazilian marshal. Tamoio carried the Duque de Caxias identity for a short spell in the mid-1990s before folding, and when the project was revived and formally registered on 8 March 2005, the name was kept for good. Club materials sometimes list 1913 as the founding year, but that date belongs to the city's original football club, not to this one.

The Tricolor, as the club is known for its orange, blue and white colours, plays at the Estádio Romário de Souza Faria, a 3,334-seat ground better known by its nickname, Marrentão. Progress came quickly in the new club's early years: promotion took it into Brazil's Série B by 2009, when it finished eighth, and in 2013 it won the Copa Rio, its first senior title. The following year undid most of it — Duque de Caxias was relegated to the Série B1 of the state championship and dropped as far as Série D nationally in the same season, and the club spent much of the next decade in the lower reaches of Rio de Janeiro football.

That run ended in 2023, when the club won the Campeonato Carioca Série B1 and the Taça Corcovado to return to the state's Série A2. The following year brought a different kind of setback: a labour court barred Duque de Caxias from registering new players over unpaid debts to former footballers, a ruling still shaping how the club can rebuild its squad. The Clássico da Baixada against Nova Iguaçu remains the fixture that matters most locally, whatever division either side is in.
