Frew Habtegebriel took charge of the age group in December 2019.

The team plays under the same name as Ethiopia's senior side, the Walia, and wears the same green, yellow and red. There is no separate badge for the youth side; it takes the federation's emblem as its own.

The high point remains 2001, when Ethiopia won the African Youth Championship on home ground in Addis Ababa and travelled to Argentina for the World Youth Championship. The draw put them with the hosts, China and Ecuador, and they lost all three matches. Regionally, the record reads better: three CECAFA Under-20 titles, against Tanzania in 1995, Uganda in 1996 and Burundi in 2005.

Among those who wore the shirt in Argentina, Girma Ashenafi is the name still mentioned from that squad, one of the few to have played at a World Youth Championship.
