FAR Rabat

AS FAR fights on two fronts. Within Rabat itself, the derby runs against FUS Rabat, a rivalry confined to the capital and sharpened by proximity. Nationally, the sharper edge belongs to Wydad Casablanca, a fixture Moroccan football calls the clásico, with Raja Casablanca supplying a second, near-equal grudge from the same city.

The club grew out of the army. Prince Moulay Hassan and Colonel Abd-el-Fassi set it up in 1958, not as a football side alone but as a multi-sport outfit covering athletics, basketball and swimming alongside the game itself. The military origin stuck: the nickname, Les Militaires, still points back to it.

Success came almost immediately and then repeated itself in bursts. AS FAR won the Throne Cup in its first season, 1959, while still playing in the second division, then took four straight league titles between 1960 and 1964. A refereeing scandal cost the club its place in domestic competition for the 1964/65 season. The recovery, when it came in 1984 and 1985, was complete: the league, the Throne Cup, and the CAF Champions League, the first time a Moroccan club had won it.

A second continental run followed in 2005, the CAF Confederation Cup. Domestically, the club has kept adding to its collection — 13 league titles in total, the most recent arriving in 2022/23 after a 15-year gap. The home ground has changed more recently than the trophy count: the old Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, which held close to 69,000, was demolished and rebuilt, and since the 2025/26 season the club has played its home matches at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, a ground of 21,000.

What has not returned since 2005 is a continental trophy. Two African titles sit in the club's history, one from the mid-1980s and one from the following decade, and nothing has joined them since.
