Freienbach

Football in Freienbach grew out of a village on the shore of Lake Zurich, in the canton of Schwyz, where a group of locals put together a team in 1965 and kept it running on modest means ever since. The club has never chased headlines; its Sportanlage Chrummen ground, with room for around 4,500 across a small seated stand and standing terraces, tells the same story of a community side built for its own people rather than for crowds.

The furthest FC Freienbach has climbed is 1. Liga Classic, the fourth tier of Swiss football, and it got there the hard way: in 2020/21 the team topped its group in the 2. Liga Interregional and earned promotion. Staying there has proved harder than reaching it — in 2024/25 Freienbach finished 12th of 16 in its group, mid-table survival rather than a push for anything higher.

What sits oddest, and best, in the club's history is a prize that has nothing to do with results. In 2011, the Swiss Football Association and the Zurich regional football association both honoured Freienbach with fair-play awards for its work in inclusive sport, a recognition earned off the scoreline entirely.

There is no fixture in Freienbach's calendar carrying the weight of a proper derby, no rival the club has built its identity against. The nearest thing on the pitch lately has been Rapperswil, from across the water in canton St Gallen, but nothing in how the club talks about itself turns that meeting into anything more than another Sunday afternoon on the fourth-tier ladder.
