Fremantle City

Two Fremantle clubs that had spent decades apart in the same few square kilometres put their assets together in December 2014: East Fremantle Tricolore, an Italian-heritage side dating from 1953, and Fremantle United, formed in 1979 and playing in black and white. Tricolore had already lived through one merger, disappearing into Perth SC in 1987 before pulling itself back out as an independent club in 2004. Ten years later it stopped being independent again, this time for good.

What the merged club chose not to carry across is instructive. Tricolore's state championships from the 1960s and early 1970s, and the eight amateur division titles Fremantle United collected between 1988 and 2008, sit in the predecessors' columns. Fremantle City's own record starts from scratch, and by that reckoning the club is barely a decade old.

Promotion came through the play-off in 2023, a 3-1 win over Joondalup United carrying the club into the top flight in Western Australia. First season up, it finished third on 36 points. In 2026 it reached the Round of 16 of the Australia Cup and went out to South Melbourne on penalties after a 3-3 draw, which remains the deepest run the name has managed.

The club runs on volunteers and an executive committee rather than paid staff, with Tony Estrano as president. Josh Risdon, an Australia international, is in the current squad. Scott Miller takes the senior side.

Hilton Park, on the Hilton and Beaconsfield side of town, holds 2,000 and was Fremantle United's ground before the merger. Wauhop Park in East Fremantle, where Tricolore used to play, now takes the women's and junior teams — so both old homes are still in use, for a club that no longer exists under either name.
