«The Sharks»
Island Bay United started out in 1931 as Wellington Technical College Old Boys, taking its present name only in 1966. The green, white and red on the crest trace back to that Italian community around the bay, a link the club has kept even as the playing badge outlived the old school-leavers who founded it.
Its honours belong mostly to the lower rungs of the Central League ladder — division titles through the 1980s and 1990s — but two Central League Premier championships, in 1999 and 2010, stand above the rest. In the Chatham Cup, the club has gone no further than the quarter-finals, doing so in 2003 and again in 2014.
Mario Barcia went the other way, arriving with an OFC Champions League medal already won at Team Wellington.
North Wellington AFC is the club's nearest rival, though the fixture has never taken on a name of its own.
